I dont think his early stuff is mechanical however with the later albums I will have to agree with you.His first few albums were not mechanical...well to me there not. They are true rock records.

I think they're still great. You have to allow a band to evolve and not hold them to the old stuff. OU812 had some of the best Eddie riffs if you ask me, they just got a little too synthesized. What they lost in rock they gained in song writing. The stuff I have a problem with is the new three songs on the greatest hits album, Eddie seemed to forget to add his trademark melody which he has mastered in the past.

I think Eddies riffs are always there...there is no denying that...I think its the way the albums were mixed and the volcals/songs that never did it for me...I never really sat down to listen to OU812 from beginning to end...I always end up shutting it off and putting on 5150...5150 spoiled me it was so amazing...off of OU812 I like "when its love" song wise...I mean the whole album has cool riffs and intros and Eddies little magical things he does with guitar however the songs are not that good...in a vocal sense...not very catchy...I never liked finished what you started...black and blue is kind of boring...But like I said his riffs are always there...songs didnt do t in a vocal sense...kind of boring.
With unlawful carnal Knowledge I always thought the guitar was not up front enough and was a little to distant and not in your face enough...Also the only song I like on this album in a song/vocal sense is Top of the world with the begiining starting with the riff he ended Jump with off of 1984...
I learned how to play alot of OU812 for the guitar riffs...however I never really like the vocals or melodies to much off that album except "when its love".
On a side note...enough with the word "love" in the song titles already...I would like to go through every song of Van Halen and see how many have the word love in them...Its alot...too much.
