What do I mean by that...I find singers and lead guitar players forget to pause in a song to create emotion...sometimes its what you dont sing or play that can create a mood...the blues is a good example of this...blues lead guitar gets emotion from pausing in places as to not ramble on and play as many notes as they can.
This can be adapted to vocals as well...give it a try
